Local-Scale Case Studies

Local Study | Dinder and Rahad Basin

Location: a transboundary basin located in the Blue Nile River Basin in Ethiopia and Sudan.

Area: around 77,500 km²

Population: 1.5 million

Key challenges:
    • The natural resources of the basin have been exploited heavily because of the unplanned human practices.
    • Variation in rainfall and prolonged drought are affecting the rainfed-agriculture and the food security in the basin.
    • Land cover in the basin was changed significantly over the past years which affect the streamflow and dependent activates.
    • Data on water availability, water use, and efficiency are often very poor, so that no adequate decisions can be made for short-term or strategic measures towards increased water security
